World IoT Innovation and Application Forum themed on new era, new economy and new application was held in Beijing on January 22-23, 2018. The forum attracted representatives of standardization organizations including ISO, IEEE, BSI and SESEC, apart from experts and government representatives from more than 20 foreign countries and the worlds top IoT companies such as Huawei, Bosch, Alibaba Cloud, SAP, Hair, China Unicom, China Mobile, Fujitsu, etc.

This forum is aimed at promoting development, innovation and application of IoT in China and the world, providing a platform for communication and cooperation on IoT programs and technologies, exploring the trend of IoT sustainable development, and developing a new economy in the IoT world.

A preparatory working group of World IoT Standards Committee was established in the event. Dr. Shen Jie takes the position as the leader of the working group.

Standards are the key to the interconnection and sustainable development of things, said He Xuming, Executive Chairman of World IoT Convention. He added, companies in many countries and regions are currently striving to develop IoT standards, but problems emerge due to the lack of foresight and the existence of diverse standards. Therefore, issues over global IoT standards are to explored and discussed; meanwhile, the preparatory working group of World IoT standards committee is set up to tackle those problems.

Standardization experts shared their views on a variety of issues related to standards, such as how to promote global IoT standards construction, and discussed problems which may arise in the process, proposed corresponding solutions and expounded the key role of standards.

Zhou Yicheng from Fujitsu Ltd. who leads the international division of ISO 37153 working group stated that standards can provide effective measures and support UN Sustainable Development Goals (2030), which are quite important to industrial IoT.

Dr. Shen Jie, the leader of ISO/IEC working group on IoT Reference Architecture, also emphasized the role of standards in the interconnection of things because IoT connects all the things in each industry rather than the communication devices in sensors. That was why they proposed an IoT architecture system of six dimensional model in 2013, which later became an international standard.

Zhu Minghui from SESEC stated that European Commission has released the No. 14 action plan and shared the view that standardization supports the digitalization and the application of intelligent technologies. And Zhao Meng from IEEE China Office introduced the work of IEEE, which develops standards according to market and industry needs, in promoting the universal application of global IoT standards.

The representatives all agreed that standards shall be developed based on the new perception of IoT, and that standards test and certification are important driving force for standards construction.

This forum ended in great success, where IoT top companies displayed new technologies, new products and development plans, and gave recommendations on IoT innovation and application as well as standardization work.
